HANDICAPS
Below is probably all you NEVER wanted to know about the handicapping system: Our handicap system handles handicaps exactly the same way that the USGA handles their system. The USGA locks in on the lowest scores and has a tendency of ignoring the higher scores. Your handicap is your potential and not your average. Of course this is true for everyone to make it a level playing field. It is a much more complicated process than just adding and dividing scores. It has to with the slope and course rating of each course that you play. It also takes your 10 best performances to course and slope rating out of your last 20. This is not necessarily your lowest scores (an 80 at Texas Star blue tees would be better than a 79 from the gold tees at Mansfield National). This is the reason that I have the computer program to calculate handicaps:Golf Handicap Calculation - Step 1 http://golf.about.com/cs/handicapping/a/howcalculated.htm A minimum of five scores and a maximum m of 20 is required to get started. For each score, the USGA Course Rating and Slope Rating for the courses played are also required. Using those figures, calculate the handicap differential for each round entered using this formula: (Score - Course Rating) x 113 / Slope Rating For example, let's say the score is 85, the course rating 72.2, the slope 131. The formula would be (85 - 72.2) x 113 / 131. This differential is calculated for each round entered. (Note: The number 113 represents the slope rating of a golf course of average difficulty, as set by the USGA.) This does NOT change how you post your scores to the score card! I hope to explain why sometimes your score on the score history is different than the score that you turn in at the end of the round and how the handicap is formulated. The USGA's formula restricts the allowed strokes-per-hole: Handicap - Allowed Strokes 9 or less maximum of a double bogey 10-19 - 7 maximum score 20-29 - 8 maximum score 30-39 - 9 maximum score 40 and above 10 maximum score. With a USGA handicap: Of the 1ST 5 scores it would take the lowest score of the 5 to calculate your handicap. After 7 recorded scores it would use your 2 lowest scores, after 9 recorded scores it would use your 3 lowest scores, after 11 recorded scores it would use your 4 lowest scores, after 13 recorded scores it would use your 5 lowest scores, after 16 recorded scores it would use your 6 lowest scores, after 17 recorded scores it would use your 7 lowest scores, after 18 recorded scores it would use your 8 lowest scores, after 19 recorded scores it would use your 9 lowest scores, after 20 recorded scores it would use your 10 lowest scores, after 20 scores have been recorded it will drop off you oldest score when another score is entered and then recalculate your 10 lowest scores to establish your handicap index.Your handicap will change by course based on the difficulty of the course(slope and course rating). The computer program does this automatically for us. The "Score History Report" will mark an asterisk(*) next to the scores that it is using to calculate the handicap. If you have any questions - please send me an E-Mail (grumpy.o.men@att.net) and I will do my best to answer them. THANKS TOM MOORE |
